Meet Maryam Finnigan
Maryam Finnigan

My name is Maryam Finnigan. I grew up and graduated high school in Tehran (Persia). I then got my BS in nursing in Germany. I spent many years as a critical care nurse at a hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany. I also worked at a hospice house in Germany.

I moved to Monterey in 2000 after marrying my husband, a Monterey native. I worked at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for 6 years until I began working for VNA Hospice 8 years ago.

It has been during my time as a Hospice Nurse that I feel like I have touched the most lives and witnessed the most unforgettable stories. I remember one of my clients telling me, “If I can’t enjoy my life anymore, then this is not a good place for me to be.”

At VNA Hospice, we bring quality of life to a place where most people think that there is nothing left. Yet even in that last bit of life, the quality still counts. Our goal in hospice care is to provide love, peace, comfort, and dignity to our clients in their own homes, with their family and loved ones surrounding them.

I also feel that we are role models for the next generation. We can educate the community about comfort care and hospice care as part of end-of-life care.

Life is enjoyable, while death is peaceful. I believe that there is a time to support life, and there is another time to support death and there is nothing wrong with either.
