The Helen Westland Legacy Society
The Helen Westland Legacy Society is named in honor of a true champion for hospice care. A strong advocate for quality, dignified end-of-life care and services for her community, Helen Westland embodied generosity, kindness and a tenacious commitment to ensuring the availability of hospice care locally.
From the founding of the first hospice program in Monterey County in 1977 to her death in 2006, Helen was steadfast in her advocacy and support for the hospice cause. Over the years, her leadership in fundraising helped to make hospice care available for thousands of Central Coast families. She was also instrumental in raising more than $1 million to build a state-of-the-art 28-bed inpatient care center in Monterey, California. The center, which bears her name, now provides post-surgical rehabilitation care as well as inpatient hospice care when needed.
The Society keeps her legacy alive by recognizing individuals who also envision hospice care well into the future. These individuals have demonstrated their commitment and support to this cause by naming Hospice Foundation in their estate plans through either a will, a charitable gift annuity, or other planned giving instrument.
All Helen Westland Legacy Society members are gratefully recognized by listing their name in the Foundation’s Annual Report which is published in the spring. Legacy Society members can take pride in knowing that they are ensuring the availability of high-quality, dignified and compassionate end-of-life care well into the future.
